Spend a few uninterrupted days in an 18th-century house in North Norfolk, learning from an exceptional artist, working in a small group, sharing food and conversation together.

Come as a day guest or stay in the Philip Webb wing at Cranmer and make the course a retreat. Either way, be inspired by the Norfolk landscape, gather around the table for meals freshly prepared by our chef, and share conversation and ideas with other artists. Our group size is limited to ten, to give time for individual tuition and our guests are serious about their creativity and curious to learn. Our tutors are professional artists and thoughtful teachers.

Cranmer Hall is a Grade II* listed building of architectural and historic significance. The house dates from the early eighteenth century. Once home to Dr Edward de Bono who wrote many of his books on Lateral Thinking here. Cranmer Studio is located in the wing, a later nineteenth-century addition attributed to the Arts and Crafts architect Philip Webb. The wing has also been a school. This history reflects our ethos, we provide educational workshops on creative themes.​

The atmosphere is quiet, comfortable, and informal, allowing you to settle in and focus fully on your work. Our courses are small, and the setting is an integral part of the experience. Many guests value the opportunity to step away from everyday routines and spend uninterrupted time in a place dedicated to observation, reflection, and making. The painting and drawing studio is 7m x 10m offering plenty of space for up to ten students. 

​​Our location is far enough away to break with the familiarity of the status quo and encourage reflection. North Norfolk, on the east coast of England, is famous for its expansive skyline. Cranmer is a three-hour drive from London, or a 90-minute train journey. We can provide transport to and from Kings Lynn train station.

Accessibility

The historic character of Cranmer Hall means that there are steps, uneven thresholds, a gravel drive, and all bedrooms are on the first floor. Subject to availability, we offer ground-level accommodation at the nearby Cranmer Cottages and we can provide transport if required. The studio and dining spaces are on the ground floor.
