ART INSTALLATION AT THE FAKENHAM GASWORKS UNTIL 31 OCTOBER
'One Stick is Easy to Break'
Behind an unassuming frontage on Hempton Rd in Fakenham lies the last remaining gasworks in England and Wales. It's a fascinating place to visit and if you haven't already been, you really should. Not only is this a remarkable piece of history, but as part of a collaboration between the museum and a Norfolk based artist, it now houses a body of artwork which shines an additional light on the significance and history of these gasworks.
Nick Ezra met the artist, Ricardo Pimentel, during an open house art event at Oliver's Tower, South Creake (another fascinating historical building viewable by appointment only). Nick proposed using the gasworks as a backdrop for Ricardo's artwork and Ricardo, undertaking an MA in Fine Art at Anglia Ruskin University, took this opportunity. Although primarily a screen printer and photographer this body of work for the gasworks uses steel, resin cast coal, a lot of large sticks, printing and photography to bring the gasworks, its history and the people that worked there into the limelight.
"For the museum to be lucky enough to see art bringing history to life is brilliant.
We thank Ricardo for giving us this opportunity to work together"
Nick Ezra (Volunteer)
The artworks are positioned at various points around the museum, so now not only can you view this remarkable historical site, but you can also take the time to engage with contemporary art in situ and reflect on the messages and histories that Ricardo has chosen to highlight.
The Fakenham gasworks is staffed entirely by volunteers and is open on Thursdays and Fridays, 10am – 1pm its website is www.fakenhamgasmuseum.com.
