About
Wolterton Hall and Gardens:
Once one of England’s most powerful aristocratic families, the Walpoles established their influence in North Norfolk from the 14th century and continue to play a significant role in the region today, nurturing local culture and community. Once a bastion of aristocratic power, the Walpoles have left an indelible mark on English history for centuries. Hidden amidst Norfolk’s gently rolling farmland, Wolterton Hall is a delightful stately home, harmonising architectural elegance with breathtaking views. Here, the grand stage of history meets the rhythms of everyday family life.
Hidden at the top of a graceful tree-lined drive, a magical house rises from glorious parkland. One of Norfolk’s most beautiful 18th-century rural estates, Wolterton is content to reveal its pleasures slowly. Wolterton Hall is embraced by 500 acres of flowing parkland. In this tranquil sanctuary, a refined harmony unfolds between cultivated order and untamed nature — a testament to Charles Bridgeman, visionary architect of the English landscape movement, who meticulously crafted Wolterton’s grounds in the 18th century. As in the glorious royal gardens of Windsor, Kensington, and Hampton Court — also the work of Bridgeman — wanderers here are invited to lose themselves along meandering paths, discovering hidden statues and secret vistas. Ever balancing enchantment with function, his ingenious ha-ha discreetly keeps livestock at bay while preserving Wolterton’s sweeping, unbroken views.
Wolterton’s new Arts & Culture programme:
With an exhibition of new works by Maggi Hambling and Ro Robertson, and more…
For the first time in a generation, we are opening our doors for visitors to immerse themselves in Wolterton’s history.
The new Arts & Culture Programme will juxtapose the historic house with contemporary art, a new art commission, and artist residencies, aiming to create a dialogue between old and new.
Conceived by Artistic Director Simon Oldfield, the programme will balance major presentations by leading artists alongside projects with local artists and creatives working directly from the grounds of the estate and taking inspiration from its locality and history.
