About
Few stories told at the Wells Heritage Centre capture the imagination more than those of murder, contraband and mayhem when, in the 1780s, smugglers were pitted against soldiers and Customs and Excise officers on the north Norfolk coast. Parts of this story were grippingly described by Neil Holmes in his 2008 book, The Lawless Coast, that features still-existing venues in Wells, Thornham, Kings Lynn and places in-between.The story of the Lawless Coast will be told by legendary Wells historian Tom Sands, who earlier this year, began this series with a talk about John Fryer, Sailing Master of HMS Bounty.
