The most poignant of all classical ballets is filled with dramatic passion in a chilling and heart-rending tale of love, treachery and forgiveness from beyond the grave. The moving story of delicate Giselle and her aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score.

In Alston’s newest work, Brahms Hungarian Dances, his dancers swoon with gypsy abandon, borne along by Johannes Brahms’s hugely popular music that inspired the dance. In contrast is the cool and serene Proverb (pictured), danced to music by Steve Reich. Alston has specially revived Proverb for the first time since it was created as a seventieth birthday present for Reich in 2006.

Mid-Century Modern selects outstanding dances from Alston’s half century of creativity. From his earliest existing solo of 1970 to more recent works, these extracts beautifully demonstrate the development of an extraordinary talent, performed by one of the world’s finest dance ensembles.
